How to connect Robinhood accounts to your fintech app
· SnapTrade
Building an app that connects to Robinhood? The integration you need depends on what you're building.
For a portfolio tracker or investment dashboard, SnapTrade can retrieve authorized Robinhood holdings, balances, and supported account activity. If your app needs to place trades, that's a separate integration with different eligibility and authorization requirements.
Does Robinhood have an API?
Yes. Robinhood offers a Crypto Trading API for US customers and a Trading MCP for external AI agents. These have different purposes and access requirements from connecting users’ accounts to a fintech app.
Users authorize the brokerage connection through Robinhood’s OAuth flow; your app doesn’t collect their Robinhood password. This is separate from SnapTrade OAuth, which lets users share accounts already connected in SnapTrade.
Can I connect Robinhood accounts using SnapTrade OAuth?
Yes. Users sign in to their SnapTrade account and authorize your app to access their connected Robinhood accounts. Your app receives OAuth tokens rather than registering a separate SnapTrade user or storing a userSecret. See Build an OAuth App.
How do I connect a user’s Robinhood accounts?
Use the Commercial API key flow when your app manages connections for its own end users. Keep your clientId and consumerKey securely on your backend. Robinhood reporting is available on production keys once SnapTrade approves your Production Access Application.
1. Register the user
Call registerSnapTradeUser once with a stable internal user ID. Store the returned userSecret securely against that user and reuse it for later requests.
2. Open the Connection Portal
Call loginSnapTradeUser with the stored userId and userSecret, broker: "ROBINHOOD", and connectionType: "read". Open the returned portal URL immediately: it expires after five minutes. The user completes authorization with Robinhood.
3. Retrieve accounts and holdings
Call listAllUserAccounts, then let the user select a Robinhood investment account. Before requesting its data, your backend should confirm that it belongs to the signed-in user and the intended Robinhood connection.
Use that account’s ID to retrieve its positions and balances. Positions include the security, quantity, price, and cost basis where available. The API reference has SDK examples and response schemas.
How do I handle sync and connection failures?
Authorization can finish before the first data sync. Check the account’s sync status for positions and balances, show a syncing state while data is pending, and offer a retry if it isn’t ready. An unreported status doesn’t confirm that syncing has finished.
Display when positions were fetched using data_freshness.as_of. A successful fetch doesn’t guarantee every price is current, and unavailable values should remain distinct from zero.
A disabled connection can still return cached data. Check connection health or listen for connection webhooks, then prompt the user to reconnect. Generate a portal URL with reconnect set to the existing connection ID to repair it instead of creating a duplicate.
What Robinhood data can I retrieve?
Use positions and balances for a holdings display or investment dashboard. Orders and investment transactions can support a trading journal, subject to the history available.
The table below covers the Robinhood reporting connection. Check its order-history cap and transaction exclusions before promising a complete journal. Agentic Trading has separate coverage and requirements.
| Data | What your app can retrieve | Coverage and handling |
|---|---|---|
| Accounts | Account IDs, names and total value | The account-list endpoint returns daily cached data on every plan. |
| Positions | Security, quantity, price and available cost basis | Robinhood lists stocks, ADRs, ETFs, options, crypto and tokenized assets; regional limits apply. |
| Orders | Open and executed orders | Reporting history is limited to 30 days and 100 records. |
| Transactions | Buys/sells, cash movements, dividends and option events | History is listed back to account opening. Stock rewards and bonuses aren’t returned. |
| Regional coverage | US, UK and EU | Account and asset coverage varies. See the regional notes below. |
Holdings freshness depends on your plan and the endpoint. Supported holdings endpoints fetch from the brokerage when called on Real-time; Daily uses cached data. Transactions remain daily and one day delayed on both. See the freshness guide for refresh behavior.
When calculating a portfolio total, avoid counting a cash-equivalent position twice: it may already be included in cash or buying power.
Can I build a Robinhood trading app with SnapTrade?
SnapTrade offers a separate Robinhood Agentic Trading beta for eligible US Robinhood Agentic accounts. It requires separate Robinhood authorization, read-and-trade access, and partner enablement. Users must currently complete Agentic authorization on desktop. An existing Robinhood reporting connection doesn’t automatically gain trading permissions.
The beta supports equity and options trading subject to account eligibility and approvals. It has its own reporting coverage and limits, so don’t assume the data table above applies to Agentic accounts. Check eligibility with SnapTrade before choosing this path, then use the Agentic documentation for supported orders and implementation details.
Can I use the same integration for UK and EU accounts?
Check regional coverage before building your onboarding. UK ISA accounts aren’t supported. For EU tokenized assets, transactions and tax lots aren’t available through the reporting connection.
Building a Robinhood portfolio dashboard? Start with the Commercial API key quickstart, or follow the OAuth guide if users will share accounts from SnapTrade. If your app needs to place trades, confirm Agentic Trading eligibility with SnapTrade first.
